This weekend (my first long MLK weekend in 4 years) my host family took me all over the city. On Sunday, we took a picnic lunch out to some point or cliff thing that had a little park on it. It was a gorgeous day, and so we just sat overlooking the water, watching the waves come in. About a half hour after we got there, a bunch of people started shouting and pointing. Everyone was like, whales! whales! So we looked out and sure enough there were a whole row of spouts of water. A few minutes later, they came back up and all spouted. I couldn't tell how many were there, but a park ranger/professional whale counter walked by and said there were six. Pretty soon, you could see a whole little line of at least five or six boats following the spouts.
So after the excitement wore off and we got back to eating our yummy strawberries and blueberries, suddenly there were a bunch more shouts. We walked to the edge and saw another whale, far closer than I've ever seen one to the shore. He looked really small, but we could only see a tiny bit of him. He came up and spouted a few times and went back under. Then a few minutes later, he came back up, spouted, and turned on his side to lift his fin out of the water like he was waving to us. Right before he went back under, he lifted his tail just slightly out of the water, flicked it, and then he was gone.
I think maybe he was the one that Ryan saw last Saturday in Oregon. He wanted to say congratulations. Can they swim that fast? Maybe not.
